A Book for the Future. Even with a 2006 Copyright Date.
While not light reading, this three part book is comprised of extended essays by a group of writers who given a great deal of academic consideration to animé art and history. This is a good thing since I have found it difficult to convince older academia on the intellectual merit of some animé. Susan Napier does this right from the start with her 20 page contribution on spectatorship and the feminine form, specifically in the work of Kon Satoshi. I was delighted to see his work put in such a perspective, since to my knowledge, a monograph on his works has yet to surface. Brian Ruh was also a noticeable name, since he has written an excellent book on the works of Mamoru Oshii. He weighs in on issues of adolescence and maturity in the cyborg culture, a position he asserts as relevant since, as he states in his first paragraph, “modern humans have become cyborgs.” Although I believe this assertion is driven more by an eagerness for the future than a reality of the present, the article is still engrossing. Anyone who has read Hughes’ “Citizen Cyborg” would enjoy this book, since the over zealous writers often seek to prematurely fit future politics into a society still working out past politics. But in this case, it works, since they take their cue from an art form that is very convincing in its dichotomous worship and angst of the future.

This collection charts the terrain of contemporary Japanese animation, one of the most explosive forms of visual culture to emerge at the crossroads of transnational cultural production in the last twenty-five years. The essays offer bold and insightful engagement with anime’s concerns with gender identity, anxieties about body mutation and technological monstrosity, and apocalyptic fantasies. The contributors dismantle the distinction between “high” and “low” culture and offer compelling arguments for the value and importance of the study of anime and popular culture as a key link in the translation from the local to the global.

More Naruto Info
This is the second “Anime Profiles” volume of the popular series “Naruto” covering episodes 38 through 80 with lots of pictures from the series, original artwork, puzzles, a brand-new pullout, and more.

This’ll go great with the also-informative first volume covering the first 37 episodes of the show because of the very colorful artwork and production sketches involved plus a handy episodes guide and lots more covering the numerous details and climactic points within each episode. You’ll also see some cool, yet vaguely funny, bits on some episode screencaps by the characters themselves. Not to mention a few words from the people behind the show, too.

I hope you will find this book interesting and informative if you are a fan, or in some cases “otaku”, of the series. I really hope the next volume of this cool “Anime Profiles” series will have even more episodes rundowns to spare. Also keep watching Toonami every Saturday night for even more brand new episodes on Cartoon Network, plus the Toonami Jetstream online.

Like I said before, “Believe it !”

Not what I expected – It was way better!
I ran into this author at PortCon Maine on the 4th of July 2008, and he gave me a business card saying his new book just came out called, “Anything I ever really needed to know I learned from Anime.” Being a relatively conspicuous otaku, I went to his site, read the description and bought the book.

I had a preconceived notion as to what this was going to be like; There’s tons of websites that have lists of common anime cliches like “the wrinkled old man is someone to be feared” and other humorous little anecdotes about anime factoids in general. This is not this book!

I was surprised at the thought that went into the 18 chapters of this book, and how the different lessons were defined. The chapters are like general topics; Love, Relationships, Aging, School, War, Power, etc. Inside the chapters are subsections, these are the individual lessons!

For example. Chapter 12 is titled ‘Power’, the first subsection is ‘All Powerful things must have a seal’ Then there’s a couple humorous (but true) paragraphs about how anything powerful has a seal proportionate to it’s strength, and then he gives some examples. I especially love the 4th Dimentional Rubik’s Cube seal reference!

It was surprisingly well written, but not difficult to understand – I can see how this is a young adult title, but it isn’t all happiness and flowers…

This is a book for the anime people, who are usually misunderstood, and he’s obviously a person who can see things from their pont of view. I can’t say I agreed with everything in the book, but it wasn’t really the point – it was easy to see how these lessons came from anime.

After I finished reading this book, I put it down and my GRANDMOTHER read it! It’s a quick read and she reads ALOT (I guess she saw the book and thought it would be a quick read.) She said she really liked the chapter on Love (She reads alot of romance novels ) and she had called my Aunt and recommended it for my four younger cousins to read.

I’m not going to say that my grandmother is going to sit down and start watching Bleach or anything, but this book was more about life and how anime portrays stories life, and what lessons there are in anime… and if she does want to start, the last chapter is basically a chapter on how to get started watching anime!

There were some funny sections (Why women with unnaturally colored hair are appealing), some serious ones (War and Good vs. Evil) and some that hit a little too close to home.

I would recommend this to any high schooler who likes anime, and may be having a tough time adjusting to life in general. This is turning into a book itself so…

Thanks Sid! You are probably one of the few people I’ve found who’s watched more anime than me… I’ll never look at it the same again!

enlightening
Loved this book!…easy to read & informative..my favorite was the chapter on dreams. This was written with a light-hearted review of life. very enjoyable ..looking for more by Sid

Napier’s “From Impressionism to Anime: Japan as Fantasy and Fan Cult in the Mind of the West”.

Professor Napier has disproved Kipling’s aphroism -”The east is east, and the west is west, and never the twain shall meet”. In her latest book, Professor Napier establishes the long and impressive history where the east meets the west – specifically, how the images and fantasy of Japonism were reflected in the Western intellectuals’ minds.

When the bamboo curtain was forcefully drawn open by Commodore Perry in 1853, Japan didn’t lose its mystery; in fact, the glimpses of Japan magnified its exotic allure to the Western intellectuals. This book is not only a tour de force, it is a tour d’horizon – introducing us to those whose works were influenced profoundly by their ideas (fantasies) of Japan – from the Impressionists (e.g., Monet and Van Gogh), to playwrights (e.g., Gilbert and Sullivan), to architects (e.g., Frank Lloyd Wright), to contemporary writers and film-makers (Quentin Tarantino). This cultural influence is what Prof. Napier refers to as “soft power” of Japonism. Contemporary popular Japanese culture vernacularized by anime has brought Japonism to millions to youths in the West.

I give this book four stars rather than five, because I feel forced to take away a star due to the unfortunate editing. First of all, the cover is ghastly. The photo itself is ridiculous, and its washed-out color makes it look like it went through the washing machine. Second, the quality of the photo illustrations are so pathetic – mostly black and white when the color may be the most important aspect of the Japonism to be illustrated, and even the colored illustrations are too small to appreciate. Lastly, the editor must have been asleep – the index paginations are all two or more pages off as he/she forgot to count the illustrated pages. One suspects that the publisher was trying to publish the book on the cheap, when the book is so rich, not only in textual content, but also begs for visual illustrations as they are the visions of the fantasies fancied by the Western mind.

Ko-Yung Tung, Yale University

East meets West and Wonderful Things Happen
From Impressionism to Anime: Japan as Fantasy and Fan Cult in the Mind of the West This book provides an illuminating history and analysis of the interactions of Japan and the West in the realm of the arts, literature, and film, yielding insights and assessments that are original and on the mark. It also explores the ways in which these aesthetic creations affect individual artists, viewers, readers, and fans, resulting in a virtual reality which is not just an escape but also an imaginary realm in which problems and possible solutions can be experimented and played with until they are ready for prime time in the real world. Reading it was a pleasurable and stimulating experience.

What is it about anime that is so appealing to a transnational fan base? Is the American attraction to anime similar to the popularity of previous fads of Japanese culture, like the Japonisants of fin-de-siecle France enamored of Japanese art and architecture, or the American poets in the fifties and sixties who latched onto haiku? Or is this something new, a product of global culture in which ethnic identities carry less weight? This book explores these issues by taking a look at anime fans and the place they occupy, both in terms of subculture in Japan and America, and in relation to Western perceptions of Japan since the late 1800s.

Great overview of manga, anime, and the impact of Japanese media
Just in terms of the expansive area with which MacWilliams covers the topic of Japanese Visual Culture is enough to warrant kudos. This book collects writers from across the globe to comment on Japanese visuals, aesthetics, and media from before the world knew of Hokusai’s views of Mount Fuji all the way up to computer-generated animation in films like Ghost in the Shell 2.

However, this book does not merely cover the historicity of Japanese visual culture but how it has impacted gender relations, politics, international relations, and cultural identity.

While this book does tend to get bogged down in certain areas through repetition in multiple articles (how much do we really need to hear about the changes Shojo manga brought to the industry or how Osamu Tezuka is the founder of modern manga and anime?) the book is a great foundational piece for anyone looking to further their own studies on the subject of Japanese visual culture.

Product Description

Born of Japan’s cultural encounter with Western entertainment media, manga (comic books or graphic novels) and anime (animated films) are two of the most universally recognized forms of contemporary mass culture. Because they tell stories through visual imagery, they vault over language barriers. Well suited to electronic transmission and distributed by Japan’s globalized culture industry, they have become a powerful force in both the mediascape and the marketplace. This volume brings together an international group of scholars from many specialties to probe the richness and subtleties of these deceptively simple cultural forms. The contributors explore the historical, cultural, sociological, and religious dimensions of manga and anime, and examine specific sub-genres, artists, and stylistics. The book also addresses such topics as spirituality, the use of visual culture by Japanese new religious movements, Japanese Goth, nostalgia and Japanese pop, comics for girls, and more. With illustrations throughout, it is a rich source for all scholars and fans of manga and anime as well as students of contemporary mass culture or Japanese culture and civilization.

I was skeptical at first of the subtitle, “From Easy To Otaku Obscure,” I thought, “Pshaw, what Sailormoon and Dragonball Z trivia probably.” But no! It was a pleasant surprise to find references to lesser-known anime series’ such as the Legend of Basara and Weiss Kruez, two of my personal favorites. I loved the Games section, Japanese anime-style RPG and fighting games are highly underappreciated in Western literature about contemporary Japan. When I met the author at a local bookstore, we had fantastic discussions about everything from the cultural and social implications in Final Fantasy to male and female sexuality in anime. It’s refreshing to meet another anime otaku who has the brainpower left to discuss things intelligently. Everyone, including the smallest Pokemon fan to the otaku who’s been watching anime since Astro Boy, should buy this book!

The Ultimate Answer To The Anime Questioner!
For those of us who like details, this book certainly questioned most of them. A very humorous book with comments for even the wrong answers, and a great guide for whether or not you are just starting anime or have become very obsessed with it. A variety of topics include romance, math, sci-fi, merchandise, etc. I can’t get enough of this book! It contains all the current anime and puts your brain to work, but if you don’t feel like doing that, the answers are easily accessible. A well-worth buy.

A “must” for all dedicated anime fans everywhere!
Japanese animated movies, called “anime”, have received wide popular attention with the American movie-going public, and have long had an enthusiastic following among film buffs and students of Japanese popular culture. In the Anime Trivia Quizbook, Ryan Omega offers more than 400 questions that range from the very easy to the very difficult. Fortunately, he also provides the answers. The Q & A covers all the major anima genres, from giant robots and space aliens to silent samurai and “fan service” girls. From Ah My Goddess to Zetsuai and all the anime epics in between, Anime Trivia Quizbook is enhanced with sidebars, cells, and more! This is a “must” for all dedicated anime fans everywhere!

We are interested in Anime Figures: Tokyo’s Hottest 50 Anime Figurines from amazon and I read about that ,I think that wonderfull.

BuZZ from Customer Shopping

Things are not as they seem.
This is a small book. It measures only 6 x 8 1/2 inches. It also clearly states that there are 50 figures but I only count 45! There is a picture on the front (the small one on the bottom in the middle) of a figure that is not anywhere to be found inside the book! Very misleading. Comes in a cool slip case though.

Anime Figures – Tokyo’s Hottest 50 Figurines” is an awesome book for those into PVC figurines from Japan
Although I personally never owned a Japanese anime PVC, I’ve seen them so many times in Akihabara, sold at anime conventions and I can see why otaku really go for them.

These PVC action figures feature anime characters in the sexiest and seductive pose, really good craftmanship and a keen sense of detail on umm…certain body parts. These figurines are the ultimate in fan service but the chance to own them is a collector’s dream.

The book features two pages with photos of Tokyo’s hottest 50 figurines. Americans will no doubt know Amane Misa of “Death Note”, Belldandy of “Ah! My Goddess”, Ayanami Rei of “Evangelion” and video game fans who may know Tojo Mitsuru of “Persona 3 and Shieri and Shion of the popular “Melty Blood” series.

The photos by Shimono Yoshio really capture the craftmanship of the figurines. The sculpting are very well done and one thing that these PVC’s sure do emphasize a lot are on the female character’s breasts and nipples sticking out through their clothing. Also, the fan service of a anime girl with her skirt flowing in the wind and a peek at her underpants.

It’s quite perverted if you think about it, especially if you are not into figurines.

But for toy collectors in America who like detail for “Star Wars” figures, especially that Slave Leia and Scarlett or Baroness of GI Joe and how their curvatures are shown and give them a slight fan service, the Japanese figurines make sure that the otaku gets their money worth.

One PVC featuring Shion of “Melty Blood”, is shown on all fours in her school girl outfit (maybe looking for something she lost in the ground) and of course, fan service giving a sneak peak of her rear end.

The creator of the model made sure that the curves were well done, especially the lines from her umm..panty region. And Shimono made sure the lighting was perfect to create the shadowing in his photos.

The most jawdropping figure was of an original character named Aizawa Sanae dressed in a cow-like cosplay with a cowbell around her neck ala choker but no bra and the detail in the breast area, the creators went all out in making sure everything looked realistic in a fantasy sense. The figure just screams “Got milk?”

By saying that, by no means is this book for the kiddies. The book and it’s slip case cover have a big red words in the back that say “Contains PVC Nudity”.

Also, I have seen these figures from Akihabara blogs and I can definitely understand why these figurines are attractive to the consumer.

These figures scream to the otaku… “Buy Me”!

So, if you have any remote interest in PVC figurine collecting especially for video game and anime characters, this book is definitely for you.

A worthwhile book for fans of anime figures
I wouldn’t say these are the 50 hottest figures, I’ve seen better, but the ones chosen for the book are still decent. Small book with very little text, but the photography is great. I noticed a few typos. Ryomou Shimei is refered to as Ryofu Housen and the names on pg.20 and 21 have been transposed. Really a small issue for an otherwise good book. A worthwhile purchase for fans of anime figures.

If you like your women sassy, sophisticated and synthetic, then get in line, `cos anime figurines are hot and getting hotter! The half-naked lumps of plastic that line the shelves of Japan’s otaku stores ooze such sex appeal that demand and supply might as well live on different planets. That’s all well and good if you’re The Man, but with prices as high as a Tokyo tenth-grader’s skirt, how’s the “real fan” of My-HiME, ToHeart2, or even Night Shift Nurses, ever gonna get his hands on his significant other?

The answer is Anime Figures: Tokyo’s Hottest 50 Figurines.

For much (much!) less than the price of one figure, 50 of the hottest girls to come out of Tokyo’s sexiest anime productions are introduced in gorgeous, glossy full color. Some you already know–Rei Ayanami from Neon Genesis Evangelion, Mizuho Kazami from Please Teacher!–and some you’re gonna wish you knew–Mizuki Takase from Comic Party, and “bodacious bovine babe” Sanae Aizawa. Totally authentic, totally hot, this sizzling collection of PVC pin-ups is a must for every red-blooded anime fan.
